The cat in the hat…HAT [tutorial]

February 29, 2012 By Elena

I’m alive. Yes it’s been a bad week with the allergy and I really felt very bad. When I went to the doctor she gave me a steroid shot (!!!!) and now I’m feeling really good.

I left all the projects and the work at home beside and also the kids were sick…so it was a bad week but this one it’s going to be much much better.
First of all I have my energy back. Second tonight my sister and my little nephew are coming to visit from Italy and I’m so so excited! Third yesterday I sold three of my little wood playboxes and I was really happy because I love to create them.
March is going to be very intense with a lot of projects that I want to share.
Friday is Dr Seuss Day and this year I decided to make my kids an easy and fast hat and to sew an applique and a stripped bow tie on a tshirt.
But first the HAT .
The idea was SEWING the hat following this tutorial from MAMA LUSCO . But…
BUT I had the glue gun ready and felt+hot glue = perfect/easy/fast . Ok not so professional and amazing like the sewed version…
You’ll need some red felt , white felt , a few pipe cleaners , glue gun and scissors.
I bought everything at JoAnn with some coupons. (you’ll probably need half yard for each felt color).

A. Cut 3 red felt stripes and 2 white one: 3” W x 22” L.
Begin to glue the stripes together as shown on the pictures: put a stripe on the other and begin with the red one. Wait until dry and then open the red stripe you just glued. Now lay the white stripe on the red one and glue them together and so on.

B.
After finish with the body of the hat we have to glue the cylinder together withe the wrong side outside.
C.
1. Draw on some paper a circle with about 3,5” radius.
Cut from red felt. You can be even smarter by cutting a larger circle with 5” in radius and then draw inside the 3,5” radius so you don’t waist time and you already got one pieces of the hat brim.
I wasn’t so smart…:-)
2 and 3. Begin to glue the top hat to the cylinder always with the wrong side of the hat outside.
4, 5 and 6. Than draw the hat brim and cut 2 pieces: one white and one red and glue them together.
7. TURN THE HAT inside out so that you have now the right side out and begin to glue the hat brim to the hat. Be very careful and use some clothespins to secure the pieces together and wait until is dry.
8. Glue a couples of pipe cleaners in the inside. This will help you to give the shape to your hat.
I think it is better to glue the pipe cleaners right after the second step, but anyway…
9. And the hat is finished!
